A Hero set in Stone

Published by Andy at November 5, 2020

The Kilmorie Stone, at Kirkcolm Church, dates to the 9th-10th centuries and features a depiction of mythical Scandinavian hero Sigurd, famous for many daring deeds including fighting a dragon!

Unusually, the stone also incorporates Christian iconography, and represents an important merging of Viking and Christian influence on Galloway in the 9th-10th centuries. The #RhinsRevealed community archaeology project will be delivering a series of online events in the coming weeks and months. To stay up to date, you might like to sign up to the project mailing list.
