Killantringan Lighthouse and the MV Craigantlet

The MV Craigantlet was an 800 ton container ship. On the 25th February 1982 she left Belfast heading for Liverpool. In the early hours of the next morning she ran aground in gale force winds on the rocks below Killantringan Lighthouse. Portpatrick lifeboat was called out however the strength of the winds combined with how close the ship was to the cliffs made it dangerous to get close enough to rescue the crew. The eleven crew members were therefore lifted off by a Royal Navy Sea King Helicopter. The wreck of the ship was left in place and can still be seen at low tide.
