Standing Stones of Glenterrow
April 12, 2022Allans Cairn
April 13, 2022All across Scotland you can find Chambered cairns like this one. They date from the Neolithic period a about four to six thousand years ago. They were a sort of community graveyard where everyone living in the nearby area would be laid to rest.
This one is a type of cairn known as a Bargrennan Cairn. Named after another Cairn near the Village of Bargrennan that the Southern Upland Way also passes through. Bargrennan Cairns have several chambers set around a large cairn.
Unfortunately the cairn here has had a lot of damage. Many of the stones that once made up the chambers have been taken and used to build the farm dykes and buildings. There is even one stone that is said to have been used on a kitchen floor in a house in New Luce. Now only one of the chambers still has its cap stone. You can see where some of the others used to be but most of what used to be here has been destroyed.
